Facial aging is caused from a combination of changes in our skin, tissue and bone. A progressive loss of tissue contributes to the volume loss one experiences in their lips. If you are experiencing volume loss to your lips, here at Zena Medical, we offer a multi-dimensional approach to rejuvenating your lips.
Anatomy of the perfect lip
Many of us are afraid of the fake lip look. The over-inflated lip is a cosmetic giveaway. However, natural, juicy lips are possible but a keen aesthetic eye is paramount to achieving this with a natural look. Over the years, medicine has perfected the anatomy of the perfect lip. When injecting lips, there are specific ratios and areas the injector must pay attention to. The anatomy of the perfect lip requires the top lip to be ⅙ of the bottom lip in size (see image below). When analyzing the structure of the lip, the injector must also consider the structure and symmetry of a person’s face. Not all face structures can handle a large lip. Some faces can only handle light enhancement of the lip. While a full lip can make you look younger, the injector must take all aspects of your face into consideration and sometimes a little enhancement can give big results. At ZENA medical, we take a multi-dimensional approach to ensure your lips look natural with the structure of your face.
What filler is right for me?
There are many fillers on the market and knowing which one is best for you depends on what your goals are. Do you want more volume? Does your upper lip need more definition? Are the side of your lips too skinny and disappearing? Are the vertical lip lines (smoker’s lines) making your lipstick bleed? These are the questions that guide the injector to determining which filler is right for you.
Juvederm and Restylane fillers are made of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan that is an essential component of the extracellular matrix of the dermis. The molecule plays a key role in the maintenance of skin structure and function, and its high water-binding capacity helps maintain moisture in the skin. The injection of hyaluronic acid into the skin can reduce visible signs of volume loss, while providing a natural look and feel after treatment. Fillers that are approved for lip injection:
Juvederm Ultra XC & Restylane: Juvederm Ultra XC & Restylane is a plumping gel that adds volume to the lips. This will result in a more defined lip. This filler is used for patients with a lip that needs structure AND volume.
Volbella XC/Restylane Kysse/Restylane-Silk: Volbella XC, Restylane Kysse, & Restylane-Silk is a soft gel to add subtle volume to lips and vertical lip lines. You can think of Volbella as adding a dose of hydration for your lip and resulting in a lighter fluffy look. This filler is ideal for patients who do not need structure but need a boost of hydration and subtle volume.
At ZENA Medical we use all of the fillers like an artist's palate.
You can expect one of our expert providers to evaluate your lip area, recommend the ideal filler, and customize your treatment plan to achieve the perfect lip for your face. A topical anesthetic will be applied to your lips at the beginning of treatment to reduce any discomfort. Then, an expert provider will use a fine needle to inject the formula into your lips.
Is Lip Filler Permanent?
No, lip filler with a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler like Juvederm or Restylane is NOT a permanent solution to thin lips. However, its results can last several months up to one year. Since these fillers can be dissolved, results are reversible if necessary.
