How Does Kybella® Work?

Kybella® removes stubborn fat under the chin using synthetic deoxycholic acid. This molecule occurs naturally in the digestive system, where it helps the body break down fat in our food. When injected into the submental area, Kybella® begins to break down fat cells, damaging them so the body will target them and clear them away. 

Am I a Good Candidate for Kybella®?

By some estimates, more than half of the people surveyed reported feeling uncomfortable with the appearance of the submental area. If you are one of those people, you may be a good candidate for Kybella®. 

Good candidates should have moderate to severe amounts of submental fat to see the most benefit. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you will need to wait to have Kybella®. If you have had or want to have facial surgery, discuss this during your consultation. 

How Long Does Kybella® Treatment Take?

Kybella® may use anywhere from 20 to 50 injections per treatment session. Topical numbing can be applied if needed, although not everyone finds it necessary. A treatment session takes fifteen to twenty minutes. This conveniently short treatment time lets you fit it into even a busy schedule. 

What Results Will I See With Kybella®?

You may need up to six Kybella® treatments to see your desired results. Most people have two to four treatment sessions. Results appear a few weeks after your first treatment and will continue to improve as the body removes damaged fat cells. 

The damaged cells will not be replaced because fat cells do not grow back. However, remaining fat cells can expand. Your results will last as long as you maintain a consistent weight to keep your remaining fat cells from growing. 

Is There Any Downtime With Kybella®?

You can return to your usual activities after Kybella®. After treatment, many people notice some swelling and bruising in the injection area. The bruising will fade within a week or two. Swelling can take a few weeks to resolve completely. Some people notice hardened areas under the skin. This happens to many people and will also go away within a few weeks.
